How it Works
HOW ALCOHOL BREATH TESTING WORKS
The Alcosafe Breath Tester is has been designed for measuring an
individuals Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) at one point in time.
Ethyl alcohol is detectable in the breath because it is absorbed from the mouth,
throat, stomach and into the bloodstream. Blood flows through the lungs and some
of the alcohol passes across the membranes of the tiny air sacs (alveori) and is
exhaled as air. The concentration of the alcohol in the alveolar air is proportional
to the alcohol contained in the blood. This is recorded as a percentage of breath
alcohol concentration (BAC).
The Alcosafe will display readings on a 2 digit LED display with a range of
.00 - .12% BAC
In performing a breath alcohol test, it is necessary to analyse the alveolar
(deep lung air sample). The AlcoSafe tester
incorporates the latest electronic pressure transducer, so as to record samples which
deliver at least 1.5 Litres with a continuous exhale for 5 seconds. This is
important to eliminate short exhaled samples, which can affect the accuracy of
the readings.
RE-TEST
The intoxication level will vary by each individual, and depends
upon many factors ; such as the concentration level of alcohol consumed, the contents
of the stomach, your weight and gender . Alcohol will continue to enter the blood
stream well after your last drink, so it’s important to re-test even after 2 hours
from your last drink .

Operating Instructions
Follow instructions clearly to achieve accurate test results . Alcosafe
KX-168 Alcohol Breath Tester is the smallest digital tester available and is
designed for measuring an individual Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC ) at one
point in time.
Wait 15 minutes after your last drink of Alcohol (so that any residual
Alcohol is not retained in the mouth, and is dissipated into your system.)
- Insert the battery, pull out the folding mouth piece
- Press the green power switch , a beep sound indicates and an
LED dot in the left hand of the 2 digit display flashes to
indicate the sensor is operating the purifying warm up cycled.
- Wait for the READY beep sound and the LED dot to stop
flashing. Immediately place your lips, sealing the mouthpiece and
blow / exhale for approx 5 seconds until it the tester beeps
twice . A continuous beep tone during the exhale indicates the
tester is receiving a alcohol breath sample. The tester will
automatically turn off if no air pressure is detected within 15
seconds.
Reading the test sample
The LED 2 digit digit display will record reading within the range of .00 - .12 % B.A.C
If there is an error with the test result, one of the following symbols will
appear to inform the user why the test did not work correctly.
PL : The sensor has been polluted. This can occur if the
user has not waited at least 15 minutes after smoking, eating or due to a
heavy polluted environment (bar smoke)
Press power switch for re-test.
RP : The tester did not detect an even alcohol concentration, or
the exhale / blow time was too short. A
repeat test is required. Press the power switch to re-test.
.00 : Less than .01% B.A.C alcohol is detected.
0 : No or very low alcohol has been detected or no sound tone
during the exhale / blowing time. Press the power switch to re-test.
H : Reading exceeds upper limit .12 % B.A.C. Wait 15 minutes and
re-test , as you may still have alcohol residue present in the mouth.
A WARNING FEATURE, a beep and flashing digital reading, indicates
the sample tested is close to the calibrated point.
Precautions
- Before testing wait 15 minutes after consuming Alcohol
- Re testing is recommended to wait 2 minutes between sampling
- Do not blow cigarette smoke, food or liquid into the mouth piece as this will
damage the sensor. Wait a minimum of 15 minutes after smoking or
eating before testing.
- Avoid using in strong wind or polluted environment.
- Do not use in extreme temperatures: operating range 10 – 40 C
- The tester will shut of automatically if not tested within 15 secs
after ready beep sound or after the reading has been displayed for more
than 10 seconds.
Recalibration Service:
Once purchased, please complete and return the Warranty Card so that we can
send you a reminder notice about recalibration.
The
Alcosafe Breath
Tester uses the latest sensor to measure Breath Alcohol Levels (BAC).
Depending upon the amount of alcohol registered by this sensor, after a period
of time, the sensor can become contaminated and will require recalibration.
The
Alcosafe is designed for personal use, we recommend this is done every 12
months. You will be able to identify the need for re calibration as the tester
will measure unusually high or low readings.
Current recalibration cost is NZ$45.00 (incl gst & Courier Cost within New
Zealand)
- Remove Battery.
